Those who attended Electric Zoo this past weekend might have noticed a familiar face fist-pumping furiously behind the decks. No, the Molly wasn’t playing tricks on them: teen heartthrob Ansel Elgort (you know, the cutie from The Fault in Our Stars) is also a DJ who performs under the name Ansolo. I’m not sure whether he’s aiming to make a play on Han Solo (which would be very appropriate, timing wise) or he wishes to sound like the fourth member of the Swedish House Mafia. Either way, it’s a terrible name.
But before you go likening Elgort to Paris Hilton, you ought to know he’s taking this whole DJ thing pretty seriously. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Ansolo, who just got signed to Island Records, revealed he’s been quietly gaining a following for a year, carefully keeping his burgeoning music career separate from his celebrity. “I didn’t headline until I knew that I had a fan base. I wanted people to care about the music and not just say, ‘Oh, the kid from The Fault in Our Stars is DJ’ing.'” Since he didn’t opt to don a Daft Punk-esque mask and he just did a big interview with Rolling Stone, some people are probably still going to say that, but it’s a nice sentiment anyhow.
So what can we expect from Ansolo? He describes his sound as “groovy house music.” “It can be euphoric at times, and it can be intense at times. It makes you feel things,” he says. Feeling things is nice, I guess.
Meanwhile, Elgort’s fascination with his other life is evident. “It’s magical. It’s something on your computer you can do all by yourself,” he says. (That’s what he said).
