An Explanation of What That Super Violent Ryan Gosling Movie Is About

+

A new movie starring Ryan Gosling and directed by the guy who did Drive is probably an automatic sell to plenty of art-minded moviegoers regardless how many Gosling-specific Tumblrs they follow. Still, the American trailer for Only God Forgives was awfully light on details aside from the montages of well-lit photography and impressionistic violence set to throbbing electronic music—just like the last one, yeah, but not so much to go off on if you’re trying to sell a parent or spouse on something more than “There’s going to be a ton of blood and beautiful people and beautiful people covered in blood, what do you think?”

The newest trailer is a bit more revealing. Gosling is the son of a drug lord whose other son was murdered by a hit man, and he’s been dispatched by mother dearest to get revenge for his family by beating the hell out of anything that gets in his way. That gives the violence some proper context, along with an explanation of what makes said hit man—played by Vithaya Pansringarm, who actually gets actor billing in the trailer next to Gosling and Kristin Scott Thomas (the mother)—such a creepy, dangerous-looking guy. There’s more to the violence than violence’s sake—but yeah, that part looks pretty cool, too.
