Exciting news this morning for fans of televised singing competitions and wacky racial stereotypes! Presenting the release of this “urban” re-telling of the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast, called Beauty and the Beat. Produced by Todrick Hall, and starring Katie Stevens, both American Idol alums I’m told (I don’t watch much TV you guys), it also features DeStorm, GloZell, Vonzell Solomon, Miles Jai, and Antoine Dodson, all of whom you’ll recognize from that one show YouTube. It’s a frolic through the city as Stevens’ “bougie” Belle experiences a bit of culture shock. It’s a surprisingly hilarious send up of musical theater conventions and hood cliches, although overly sensitive white liberals like myself are going to have to double check on whether or not we’re allowed to say that last part first.
