Good afternoon, Upper East Siders. Today in “what could have been,” Oscar darling and totally regular gal Jennifer Lawrence, like, totally auditioned to play Serena van der Woodsen in CW masterpiece Gossip Girl. Lawrence was, of course, beat out by Blake Lively, whose career hasn’t exactly soared in the wake of the show (don’t tell Vogue though – they love putting Lively on the cover).
“We did not realize this at the time, but Jennifer Lawrence really wanted to play Serena and auditioned,” Gossip Girl creator Schwartz told Vulture. “This story came to us secondhand, but we were told she definitely auditioned and was bummed to not get it.” Schwartz can’t even remember if he watched Lawrence’s audition tape. LOL.
Meanwhile, Lawrence would have made a dope Serena, right?! The whole thing with Serena is that she’s absurdly, otherworldly beautiful but so super chill and aloof (in a hippie dippy, earthy way) that she’s beloved by boys and girls alike. It’s her down-to-earth demeanor that lands Brooklyn heartthrob Dan Humphrey, after all. And J-Law totally does stuff like this anyway:
But had Lawrence landed the role, she would have been so strongly associated with Serena that she would have struggled to land another major adaptation – so there goes Hunger Games. It would have thrown off her entire career. Meanwhile, where would Blake Lively be? Winning Oscars? Okay, let’s not go too far.
Anyway, this has been an episode of “Hollywood: What could have been.” You know you love me, XOXO.
