If you took a casual straw poll of the Internet’s favorite actresses, Community‘s Alison Brie and Party Down‘s Lizzy Caplan would probably rank pretty high: they’ve both starred in cult comedy television shows, and seem to effortlessly embody the funny/talented/gorgeous combination that thousands of computer-bound bros, to say nothing of the girls, would die to interact with. Which is why it’s a delight to see them co-starring in Save the Date, a comedy from the producers of The Kids Are Alright wherein they play sisters with a different set of priorities: Brie, the responsible marriage-ready one, and Caplan, the hell-raiser with a case of emotional wanderlust. Shit happens when Caplan’s bf unsuccessfully proposes to her, and the inevitable interpersonal inertia seems to lead the characters toward all sorts of wisecracks and personality developments. When done well, why not? A few other familiar faces like Martin Starr (also from Party Down!) pop up, but this is certainly a showcase for Brie and Caplan to out-breakout each other, at least according to the effusive pre-release praise. There isn’t a release date announced, but let’s hope it’s soon enough.
