As Sleigh Bells gears up to release their new album, Jessica Rabbit, the Brooklyn noise-pop duo has dropped a Twin Peaks-style video for the album’s dreamy ballad, “I Can Only Stare.” Co-directed by Sleigh Bells’ Derek Miller and filmmaker Alex Ross Perry, “I Can Only Stare” is a surreal melodrama, starring lead vocalist Alexis Krauss.
In the video, the singer plays a suburban mom, tacky bride and angsty punk, all desperate and despondent, before they finally regain control. Darkly comedic, the clip is equally optimistic and seriously sad, mirroring the track itself, which fuses dance-pop with gloomy synths, as Krauss’ vocals soar above—part Kate Bush, part Depeche Mode.
“It’s bleak, but hopefully inspiring, too,” Miller said. “Most of us have probably felt like one or all three of these characters at some point in time—I know I have.”
