Berlin, Germany, the Turkish dominated neighborhood of Neukölln, to be precise: that’s where Ali, a retired Turkish doctor now working as a tailor, and Zoe Spawton, an Australia-born photographer, both live. Spawton noticed this older gentleman walking by her apartment every morning at 9:05 a.m. sharp, always impeccably dressed. Last August, Zoe stopped the man, Ali, and asked if she could photograph him. He agreed and she started collecting her portraits of him on a blog dedicated to his style called What Ali Wore. The two developed a relationship—it really sounds like a collaboration—and now her/their blog is blowing up.
We love Ali for his irreverent style quirks—a Nike tuque and cowboy boots with a single-breasted suit? Per-fect. We love Ali for his swagger and confidence. We love Ali because he’s practicing a tried and true style rule: find a silhouette that suits you, stick to it, and accessorize. He’s a tailor. He knows what’s up. We love Ali because he isn’t like what we’re used to seeing on personal style blogs. We love Ali because he looks like he’s having fun. And because he looks great.
Today, I’m wearing an Ali inspired look. How about you?
