A Villainous Werner Herzog Haunts Tom Cruise in New Movie

+

It’s possible that Jack Reacher, Tom Cruise’s new action movie, might be awesome: Cruise looks to be affecting another version of his calm, collected badass type, which we’ve seen across Mission ImpossibleTop GunKnight and Day, etc., and hey, another action movie. Sure! But the real shit I’m invested in is the apparently quite serious participation of Werner Herzog, German director extraordinaire, as the film’s arch-villain. I confess it’s never crossed my mind before this trailer, but think about what perfect sense it makes to use Herzog as a bad guy: He’s got that diabolically deadpan German accent, as well as the emotionless demeanor of a man who’s spent his entire life chronicling the fucked-uppitudes of nature, from bears who eat men to the secret lives of dwarves and the inner eye of madness cultivated when one insists on pulling a boat over a goddamn mountain. And that’s just who he is as a regular guy! Of course it would work as a fictionally villainous personality. Even if this movie doesn’t do that well at the box office, at least it’ll have scored the financial support of every German New Wave scholar in the country. (Of which there are like 17, but still. MONEY IN THE BANK)
