’90s Movies to Inspire Your 2012 Halloween Costume

+

I have this theory that Halloween is the season you embrace what you most want to be. This is why so many of us take the opportunity to slut it up (Dan Savage calls it “Straight Pride” or “Happy Heteroween”). Nineties fashion is back in every incarnation: skate, rave, goth, grunge, minimalism. What this nostalgic dress tells me is that we want to relive our recent past. This Straight Pride, let’s embrace that desire. Here are some costume inspirations brought to you by the most stylish movies of the 1990s. Looks so good.

My Own Private Idaho, 1991
“Hey man, did you get into that Sinead O’Connor concert last night?”

Clueless, 1995
“So, okay, I don’t want to be a traitor to my generation and all, but I don’t get how guys dress today. I mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair, ew, and cover it up with a backwards cap and, like, we’re expected to swoon? I don’t think so!”

Hackers, 1995
“You look good in a dress.”

The Craft, 1996
“Now is the time. This is the hour. Ours is the magic. Ours is the power. Now is the time. This is the hour. Ours is the magic. Ours is the power.”

Romeo + Juliet, 1996
“If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking and you beat love down.”

The Fifth Element, 1997
“Leeloo Dallas mul-ti-pass.”

Buffalo 66, 1998
“And I’ll tell you something else, you make me look bad… I will never ever talk to you again, ever. But if you do a good job, well, then you can be my best friend. My best friend that I’ve ever had. You hear me?”
