It’s important not to be too precious when it comes to listening, or recording for that matter, cover versions of beloved songs. So, in that sense, I applaud both Lucius and Wrongchilde for trying their hand at two classics, “Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, and Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield” respectively.
Wrongchilde is the project of Mat Devine, the Kill Hannah frontman, with vocals from former M83 singer Morgan Kibby, now of White Seas. It’s a song as pensive and languorous as Benetar’s original is charging and defiant. Lucius’ version is similarly slowed-down and methodical as opposed to the original’s sense of buoyant momentum.
Both are interesting enough takes, but mostly they kind of just make me want to go back and listen to the near-flawless originals. I’m not sure if that’s a sign of a great cover, or a really bad one.
